David Shorthouse : Ironman

Wagg has a history of providing support and sponsorship to worthy causes as we feel it is important to give something back to our customers and supporters.  We do this through both long term sponsorship of individual dogs and teams, and in the form of prizes to a wide range of dogs shows and events all around the United Kingdom.

All our staff are animal lovers, but many also have hobbies and passions that push them to go that extra mile. David has been a member of our sales team since 2011 and has decided, perhaps in a moment of madness, that he is going to take place in Iron man 2014.

David and his family in Greece, 2 weeks before Training

Inspired by friends that finished this year’s event David has signed up for this challenge which takes place in July of next year. He has also committed to raise a significant amount of money in aid of Scope, a charity that helps support disabled people and their families.

Ironman consists of 2.5mile swim, a 112 mile bike road, followed by a marathon to finish him off, the winner will come in at around 9hr 30mins, although David is not setting his sights that high, hoping to finish before the cut off of 17 hours. Although he says that seems like a distant dream at present. To prepare for an Ironman event takes 14 hours per week rising to 20 hours as the event gets closer, with long bike rides taking place at the weekends, a joy in the grim UK winter climate.

David plans to run 800 miles, cycle 4000 miles and swim around 80 miles in preparation, with many competitive events planned in between now and then such as the Ironman 70.3 on Exmoor. Since increasing his training regime over the past 4 weeks David has lost 16lbs in weight and cycled 97 miles last weekend in a little under 6 hours.

And David isn’t alone in his fundraising activities as this last weekend we had a member of staff involved in fundraising dives for Pendleside Hospice.

This involved a day of silliness which included an underwater gym circuit and giant drafts board, underwater fruit and sausage eating competition and lots of pink. This took place in memory of a friend who sadly lost his fight with cancer.

Meanwhile on dry land Emma took on the York marathon running an impressive 26.2 miles for Rochdale Dog Rescue who take in dogs from the pound to prevent them from being put to sleep and the Jane Thomlinson Cancer appeal.
